Google Doodle The Very Best Brand Marketing
By GmaGoldie
The best brands are brands that can stand a metamorphosis. Google's doodle is proof. Google wasn't the first to step beyond the logo but still remain readily identifiable - Snickers did this same thing years before. However, the fact remains that no one, does the metamorphis of their logo better than Google - even the much loved Snickers.
The doodles exemplifies the Google brand. Often the doodles exemplifies and honors the nations of their customer base. The metamorphosis of the logo or the differing and very unique doodles serve to celebrate in a colossal manner a holiday, a person's achievements, or simply the advent of a change of a season.

Retention of the Character of the Brand
Brand managers and marketing directors take great pride in developing and creating a brand. The intangible value of a great brand can outweigh the physical assets of a company. Tiger Woods' brand is a recent example. Tiger and countless Fortune 500 companies know that Intangible value does equate tangible dollars. You image, your brand translates directly to revenue and the bottom line or return on invement. Marketing and brand management can dramatically affect your company's return on investment. Any shadow or "shame" of deviation from that brand image can cost millions.
The Irony of the Google Doodle
The irony of the Google doodle is the verb or the emetology of the word doodle "is to kill time". How many hours have all of us lost in our lives to the Internet and our multiple searches or Googles? As a noun, a doodle is a "design or scribble done absent-mindedly". The doodles of Google are anything and everything but NEVER absent minded. The doodles are always tasteful and in celebration. Always done in a timely manner complete with the target audience in mind. In fact, if you check the Google doodle site, you will clearly see, Google has doodles which are intended for global marketing and some doodgles intended for specific countries. In all cases, the doodle connects to Google's marketbase for that geographic or that culture.
Snickers - The First Metamorphosis - Tiny Known Fact
Many years ago, when I was traveling to downtown Chicago every weekend to go boating, I recall seeing taxi cabs with the "Snickers" logo - in different colors but with the same familiar Snickers outline. Is this metamorphosis akin to the real men can wear pink? Can only the strongest of brands survive a metamorphosis beyond proper color and characters?
The Doodle Trends - A Historical Perspective by Type
Reviewing the doodles is fascinating, IF you review the doodle by type over time. Take a close look below and you will some consistancies and some new and distinctive trends. One trend is what I call the "Google canvass" where the logo silhuette is lost and a painted canvas serves as the backdrop for a watermark for the words Google.
The New Google Trend - Beyond the Outline - "The Canvas"
If you look closely, one of the items that allowed both Google and Snickers to morph their logo in different colors and characters was the familiar and distinctive silhouette - the outline was always the same. In Google's doodles often the colors were identical with added subtle elements to denote the celebration - a flower for Mothers Day, an Einstein carniculture the Eiffel Tower in the place of the second "o" in Google. Now however the Google doodle is venturing beyond that highly acclaimed and much loved silhouette, now there emerges doodles are shaded and made into "art" - the art canvas blurs the famous silhouette. Does this work?! Yes! And why? Because the location of the logo is so consistent each and every time for each and every screen. Case in point is the Bar Code google - it too worked!
The Bar Code Doogle Worked!
I find it fascinating that the "bar code" Google doodle worked! Why did it work without the distinctive siloheutte? Why did it work without the letters "Google"? Why did it work with no color? Because we are so accustomed to seeing that size box in that position on our computer screen. Remember the brand managers mandate - consistency - they are right!
Series of Serious Fun - Sesame Street - 2009
Google did a series of doodles in 2009 for Sesame Street - talk about serious fun! Look even a part of Big Bird!
Series for Olympics
True to Google's global outlook Google incorporated the Olympics several times.
Global Commonality
One of the items I love about the Internet and Hub Pages is the global commonality. I find it comforting that my fellow hubbers in Asia, Australia and beyond have essentially the same Google experience. Yes, some doodles are unique and selective to only certain countries, but all of us experience that distinctive sized block and instantly recognize it from all parts of the world.
Will the New Painted Canvas Blur the Brand?
For any company other than the global giant the size of Google it might be harmful. For Google, it is a different environment. The brand image is so strong, so loved and so consistent, the new "canvas" doodle will simply add to the much loved Internet web search engine.
If Google Were a Country I Would Move There
One of the most enchanting comments I read about Google out on YouTube was "If Google were a country I would move there!" The writer was writing in response to the CEO Eric Schmidt speaking about privacy. The video is included here for your convenience.
I have to wholeheartedly agree. I love "Google country" - it offer a world of its own by supporting freedom, celebrating great accomplishments, and promoting individuality and creativity. Most importantly, Google country facilitates communications. Google has given us a common culture. I may not speak your language, live in or even understand your culture but we do now share more than just common body parts - we share the much loved Google doodle!
