Great Gifts - I Love Libraries - Books Tiffany Lamps Stain Glass and More

Updated on April 16, 2012

I am blessed with many delights in my life but perhaps one of the greatest is my library. One wonderful item is I can walk to my library but better yet the Lake Geneva, Wisconsin library has a wonderful park and view of the magnificent Geneva Lake. The library park is enjoyed by thousands each summer as families picnic underneath the 100 year old oak and maple trees. Sadly, many of the families who journey to our lake miss the real treasure, one of the world's finest libraries.

I have always loved libraries but I have never been blessed to be able to walk to a library or a lake. Additionally, the Lake Geneva library is computer friendly. I can search from my home office for any subject and literally request to pick up a library book. How quick and convenient can that be?!

What I love best about the Lake Geneva municipal library is the selection. The volumes, the donations are literally boundless. I love strolling through, sitting for a spell to be mesmerized by the blue lake and then hunting for my reading treasurers.

To love deeply is a blessing. To have the treasures of learning available to us is the sign of an advanced society. Information is power. That is one reason why I love Hub Pages so much - there is no entrance fee other than diligence and hard work.

Journey with me as we review a wonderful book about the celebration of libraries, be inspired by the dozens of library quotes, review the Tiffany Library lamp and the Tiffany windows in the University of Alabama Library and the New York Library. Learn how The Fonz is writing inspirational books for children. Listen to the old theme song from Happy Days. Try not to shed a tear when Henry Winkler shares with you his personal story about the children book series. Shop for great gifts for library lovers and explore the many options of the stain glass inspirations from Louis C.Tiffany.

If you need a great gift for an associate or a friend who loves books, the book "Heart of the Community: The Libraries We Love" is outstanding. The photos, the stories, the many inspirational quotes will delight young and old alike. Explore many other gift options along the way, from the antique sign encouraging us to follow our hearts' desire to the many stained glass library lamps and even the wisteria stained glass lamps too. Many options from the very frugal gift to the extravagant - all are memorable to the lover of knowledge and history.

One of the opening quotes in this book that celebrates the libraries that we love is from Henry Winkler. Take a step back in time, remember the American television show called Happy Days? Henry Winkler was known as "The Fonz".

"The Fonz" went on to another chapter in his life and created a series of children's books. These books have great reviews out on Amazon. If you are searching for gifts for children and you wish to bestow with them your own fondness of reading, why not consider a book written by this American teenage idol?

"I read because life isn't enough, and in the pages of a book I can be anybody; I read because the words that build the story become mine, to build my life: I read not for happy endings but for new beginnings: I'm just beginning myself, and I wouldn't mind a map; I read because I have friends who don't, and young though they are, they're beginning to run out of material; I read because every journey begins at the library, and it's time for me to start packing; I read because one of these days I'm going to get out of this town, and I'm going to go everywhere and meet everybody, I want to be ready." Richard Peck

"When I was young, we couldn't afford much. But, my library card was my key to the world." John Goodman

"The richest person in the world - in fact, all the riches in the world - couldn't provide you with anything like the endless, incredible look available at your local library. You can measure the awareness, the breadth and the wisdom of a civilization, a nation, a people by the priority given to preserving these repositories of all that we are, all that we were, or will be." Malcolm Forbes

More than a Tea Party

It is, however, not to the museum, or the lecture-room, or the drawing-school, but to the library, that we must go for the completion of our humanity. It is books that bear from age to age the intellectual wealth of the world.
- Owen Meredith, from Inspirational Quotes About Libraries, Librarians and Book Collections

The only true equalisers in the world are books; the only treasure-house open to all comers is a library; the only wealth which will not decay is knowledge; the only jewel which you can carry beyond the grave is wisdom.
- J. A. Langford

Tiffany Memorial Window University of Alabama Cost $5,000 in 1925

The production of a Tiffany memorial window was labor intensive, requiring hundreds of hours of work and a high level of craftsmanship. For these reasons, large windows cost several thousand dollars, a hefty sum in 1925, when glass workers received three dollars a day and their supervisors were paid twenty-one dollars a week.

The University of Alabama window cost $5,000, but Tiffany studios gave the U.D.C. a $1,700 discount. Even with the discount, the organization found it necessary to pay off the sum in installments.

"In 1939 the Alabama window was removed from the old Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library on campus and installed in the present main library, which bears the same name. This year [1993], in a move partially funded by the U.D.C., the window will be relocated once again, this time to the new collections building on the east side of the University of Alabama campus, where it will grace the walls of the William Stanley Hoole Special Collections Library*.

*The window is in the lobby of the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library on the 2nd floor of Mary Harmon Bryant Hall, 500 Hackberry Lane, and is visible from the street below. Please visit the library to see the window in person. "

Tiffany Design Permeate Libraries - Lamps and Windows Too

Tiffany designs permeate libraries from works of art adorning the windows to the renown stained glass library lamp. The window in the Chatham Public Library, New York is featured in the book the Heart of the Communities: Libraries we Love. Below is an exceptional work of art that is now proudly displayed in the University of Alabama Library. The story of the price tag back in 1925 is a real eye opener. His innovative designs and glass creations live on with us today both in objects of art but also in lamps and library windows. Navy Pier in Chicago, Illinois has an extensive collection of Tiffany windows on display courtesy of the generous donation of Richard Dryhaus who also donated the fountain at the Rivera in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
