Besides adding texture and style, I think there is something romantic about front doors that have glass panel inserts.

Exterior doors with glass to me are a little bit of a tease, an invitation to see - offering the allure of peaking our curiosity of what is behind that door but not a complete vision and definitely not an open door.

This traditional classic brings a new twist to classic elements of raised wood and leaded glass with a curved transom window at the top and the leaded glass design repeated throughout from the side lights to the double doors to the transom window.

To further highlight the arch and entrance of this door, the brick is curved to perfectly frame the doorway opening.

To blend the classic with the modern, this transitional design is both neutral in color and in design. A fitting exterior door for blending the old with the new. Classic leaded glass with matching diamond pattern compliment the door and its side lights.

Glass Texture

Beyond the wood grain, beyond the raised panel, beyond the glass texture, adding a leaded glass with detailed Tiffany framing is an entire new level of texture for the exterior door.

Transom Window

The transom window is the window just above the door. If you have the height in your foyer, it is a great way to add natural light to your home main entrance. The plural of transom is "transomes".

The term "transom" is an architectural terms to inidicate a piece of wood or stone across the top of a door or window. A transom window could also be over another window.

Transom in naval architecture is the surface that forms the stern of a vessel.

Wikipedia shares with us that: "Transoms may be flat or curved and they may be vertical, raked forward (known as retroussé), or raked aft.^[1][2] The bottom tip of the transom can be approximately on the waterline, in which case the stern of the vessel is referred to as a 'transom stern'."

Side Light Window

The side light window is just what it says, it is a window that is next to the door on the side. Often there is only one side light window because of space. If space allows, a side light window on each side of the entrance - either single or double doors provides a nice symmetrical presentation of the home's main entrance.

Exterior door options also include a clavos as shown to the right.

The addition of a "clavos" on an exterior door works well for a visual authenticity to doors for Old World homes. In Medieval and Renaissance architecture they were functional not decorative to the door.

The shapes, finishes and hand-forged appearance of clavos is a testament to the thoughtful artistry of another age.

Of course, you adding the panel insert of the glass is another level of texture for the door.

Door manufactures such as Jeld-Wen offer an energy efficient option for glass - both on their windows and on their doors. The high-performance low-e insulating glass lowers energy costs, helps homes stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, prevents fading of interior furnishings, and reduces condensation.

If heat gain is a concern as it is in most of southwestern United States, there is another version of low-e, call LoĒ³-366 glass. This glass provides more protection against heat gain by blocking harmful infared rays, as well as providing greater energy savings.

Tiffany style glass inserts are made with the finest hand-selected, hand made colored glass, assembled with a copper foil and lead technique. No two sheets of colored glass are identical, so slight variations in color hue may occur in each glass panel. This individuality should not be considered a defect as it adds intrinsic value to your doors. Doors with Tiffany style glass inserts must be viewed with light behind the glass in order to bring out the complete effect, as the surface colors of the glass sheets provide only one dimension of the beauty of each individual glass panel.
