Jacqueline Kennedy is often celebrated for her fashion and her jewelry.Jackie's fame really transcends far beyond fashion and jewelry and being the wife of the 35th President of the United States.

Jackie's image is enduring because her image transcends material items and social status. The standards of excellence she chose for herself and her family set her apart. She was fascinate by the arts, literature and history. Jackie was a debutante, a woman of the very wealthy and of an upper-class background. She was trained by her father Black Jack (her father's nick name - real name was John Vernou Bouvier III) to command a room, to walk into a room and beamed like a light house. Her Mother detailed the proper jewelry and clothing.

To showcase her independence and sense of propriety, legend has it that on the first night in the White House, she and John F. Kennedy were not speaking because JFK wanted her to wear a pair of earrings twice in a row. Jackie choose the company of a select few, valued her family above all items. While she could not wear a cross, she insisted that her daughter Caroline wear a cross which she still does even to this day.

Jackie was educated at the best schools: at Chapin, Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, and Vassar and obtain her degree from George Washington University.

In 1951 Jackie beat out more than twelve hundred of the college women in America to take first place in Vogue’s Prix de Paris competition, with her essay on “People I Wish I Had Known”.

The most stunning thing about Jackie was not the jewelry, the clothing, the most stunning and memorable thing is her love for JFK and her preservation of his memory and strength during a time of great mourning yet she and her family had to continue in the public eye. When life hit her hard, she rose to the challenge - that is the enduring charm of this great lady. It was her exquisite manners, the boundaries and guidelines she set for herself and her family. While acutely intelligence and very accomplished both in creativity (photography) and in languages (she was fluent in more than 3 languages), her real style, her lasting legacy was how she gracefully handled the death of her prominent husband, the 35th President of the United States of America. Jackie was only 34years old at the time of John F. Kennedy's death. We continue to be fascinated by her clothing, her jewelry but most of all the strong and independent woman that Jackie was.

Jackie’s enduring image, however, goes far beyond fashion. "The History of the Original

This necklace was Jackie’s signature piece of jewelry. Her original set was faux pearls. More than a century ago, after a hand-painting process was perfected in what would become Czechoslovakia; the wealthy began wearing faux pearls because it was particularly difficult to find pearls properly matched in color or size. When Jackie was a debutante, Kokichi Mikimoto had not yet perfected his cultured pearl process, so the wealthy continued to use the glass-based pearls from Czechoslovakia.

Jackie had many sets of pearls besides this one, and each had a special purpose or size. The set she wore and enjoyed the most is the design you see here. The three lengths are not uniformly set, as there is a larger space between the inner strand and the other two. The reason for this space was so she could wear the pearls in the manner of Coco Chanel.

Coco Chanel, a top designer that Jackie adored, devised a set of pearls in the same configuration so the lower string could be pulled up and over the upper string to produce a very special and sophisticated look. This only works well with the aforementioned gap.

Jackie won her first equestrian championship when she was just 5 years old.

Jackie was dubbed "Debutante of the Year" for the 1947-1948 season in New York by the Hearst newspaper.

After finishing school, Jacqueline won a writing contest sponsored by Vogue magazine, but turned down the prize which was a one year job at the magazine.

She attended Vassar and the Sorbonne but received her degree from George Washington University.

Jacqueline Kennedy's preservation of the White House, preservation of Grand Central Station in New York City and the overall historic preservation movement was grandly inspired by one great and independent lady. A lady who valued art, history and literature. A lady who put family before all else. A lady who is remembered today beyond her fashion flair, beyond her jewelry, beyond her elegance, a lady who is remembered for her independence and noble ambitions for her husband.

As Hugh Sidney wrote in 1994 about hand written notes from Theodore H. White and his interview with Ms. Kennedy: "No small portion of the glamour of the Kennedy stewardship that lives on today came from her standards of public propriety and majesty."
