Jackie Kennedy Gloves - Return to Fashionable Gloves
By GmaGoldie
Jackie Kennedy's iconic brand lives on even today. Her death on May 19, 1994 marked the end of a great era for fashion conscious females. And while Michelle Obama is often referred to in the same breath, the romance of the Camelot Princess remains with us even today.
Her Beauty Her Style Her Fashion Forwardness Remain Forever with Us & Her Gloves
Jackie's beauty, concern for the welfare of her children and her fashion forwardness remain with us forever. The mystique and allure of Jackie extends from female to man and across the continents.
The brand she carefully crafted with the extreme care to her clothing and her jewelry set the stage for the American Camelot royalty. Was she different from everyone else simply because of her position - definitely not. Jackie set the standards for fashion.
Jackie Kennedy Onassis July 28, 1929 - May 19, 1994
Sadly Jackie departed us in 1994, after being diagnosed a year before with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a form of cancer.

Tayler Hartly gives a delightful short history of the "glove" - from mittens and crude coverings simply in the time of Herodus in 440 BC to protect his hands from the bramble in his garden to the refined art of glove making in England and esteemed "glove maker guild".
Function and Fashion for Cold Weather
Her Attention to Detail
A visual review of Jackie found not just a savvy fashion model. She walked the talk. Yes, the reports that she refused to be photographed smoking are probably true. But if you look at all the photos in history, you will see a theme. A consistent theme of elegance and refinement.
Her Gloves - From Wedding Day to State Dinners to Equestrian Outings to Funerals
The historical accounts of Jackie and President John F. Kennedy are delightful. A visual review of her affinity not just to jewelry but also to gloves was surprising. Note how often she wore gloves - formal affairs of state are expected but look closely and you will see event after event with her gloves!
Perhaps you would say, that was a period of fashion history that was different and others wore gloves too! And part of that is true - but look at the photos. They speak for themselves.
Take particular note of her black gloves. A later time in her life next to a lady with no gloves. Very interesting photo and statement of Jackie's affinity for gloves - white, black or even riding gloves!
Later in Life - Change of History - No Gloves
The photos prove that Jackie fastidiously wore gloves throughout every event in her life. It wasn't until later in her life and when fashion mandated no gloves that we finally see Jackie without gloves.

Glove rugs and glove blouses are not likely to create a trend, but the likelihood of the return of the elegant and yet protective glove? Very probable. Even one person predicted gloves for Fall 2010 fashions.
Gloves Beyond Fashion - Also Functional
Gloves for working, riding horses continues to day. Golf gloves and now "pilate gloves" are prevalent. Swim gloves offer a wonderful way to add resistance to your swim fitness and water aerobic routines. The protection of your hands is an essential function.
Germs - Gloves Needed
And in the medical profession today, gloves are now mandatory. But what about gloves for real life? We know the spread of MRSA is from hand to face. We have issued extensive hand washing protocol for protection at hospitals and schools. Shaking hands remains an important business protocol but the germs involved, as science has now taught us, are potentially harmful even deadly to those with impaired immune systems such as the elderly.
Aging Populace - Changing the Fashion Mores
Will the functional need for protection from germs change the fashion mores here in the United States and see the re-emergence of gloves? Or does fashion just always repeat itself?

I was thinking lately myself how I would love the glove to come back into style and also with the germ connection besides beauty. I really do not think Jackie was beautiful but her style and class and carriage made her royalty real, you never noticed a flaw. She went through much she did not deserve and kept her head high and her pride. I don't think we will ever have a first lady to equal her.
BkCreative,
I too wear my gloves as long as I can - that is the one thing about winter I like!
Pollannalan,
You are absolutely correct - Jackie was flawless. She really created one of the first truly great brands. To loose family to such tragic deaths - such as shame. Died way too soon. So much pain. So very sad. You are absolutely correct. Thank you for stopping by and sharing.
I love gloves. Jackie was a fashion icon, that is for sure.
Jackie was born to be first lady. She was French and showed the elegance of the great fashion world. I have winter gloves, leather gloves, and summer gloves for formal ocassions and church. They protect the hands even in the summer from germs. Great pictures of a pass era.
Nan Mynatt,
I need summer gloves! Wow - you are a trend setter! Thank you for sharing and encouraging us!
The germ thing is beginning to be noticed but gloves just simply look elegant - winter and summer too!
I happened upon this site because of an interest in gloves. I Jackie was certainly very stylish indeed. And for those with an interest in gloves and their history, check out this: http://www.goleathergloves.com/history-of-gloves.h
Andy,
I love that website - thank you for sharing! I just re-watched the Titanic and noted the gloves. Gloves simply make sense and I do sincerely hope there is a return in fashion for gloves. The only thing in spring I miss is my gloves. I vote for spring and summer gloves too!
Wow, what a thoughtful and in depth article! Living in SoCal limits my need for the accessorie but I still own a few pairs just in case!
Jackie's gloves were certainly part of her classic style, and a must have accessory of the day. There was something so refined in a lady who wore gloves. Me, I'm glad that the glove thing is in the past. I have wearing gloves, even when I should.
TC Design,
Oh, I am jealous - love the warm weather even more than gloves!
Dolores Monet,
I miss the formality of years past. I see more and more trends towards dresses and less jeans. I admire Madonnas use of gloves. I am not that daring. And when trendy arrives, it takes me at least 24 months to adopt it. I may love fashion that fashion has to find me, I don't seek it out and am never the trendsetter.
I am huge glove person around the house - I have specific pairs of gloves for cleaning, gardening and DIY. Of course, they are all very frilly in bright pink and fun purple but of course!
Thank you so much for stopping by. Love, love your work!

What a great fashion hub - I love the rug - how creative! Honestly, I think wearing gloves not only looks great but think of all the germs it eliminates that we pass with handshakes. Many other cultures bow but do not shake hands - and you are so right - what about MRSA?
I wear my beautiful gloves as long as I can, well into spring - and I get a million compliments.
Ah, fashion used to make a lot of sense.
Thanks for such a creative hub with the greatest photos!
