JBK - Jackie Kennedy's Fashion Style Impact
By GmaGoldie
Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy’s Fashion Impact
Jackie's fashion impact continues even in 2010. As the side by side photo above details with both Jackie Kennedy's style and Anne Hathaway - we are still looking to Jackie for our fashion style and classic elegance.
Jackie came into popularity five decades ago - in the early 1960's when her husband John F. Kennedy became the 35th President of the United States.
Jackie brought art and fashion to the preeminence of United States culture. Prior to Jackie couture fashion was reserved for Europe with the world looking to French designers for trends. But Jackie was a trendsetter in and of herself. While she had studied abroad and had a special fondness for Paris, she consciously upheld her American roots and assigned Oleg Cassini as her principle designer. Yet, when she traveled to France, she graciously wore a French outfit befitting the style of France.
Fashion Designers - Cassini and Chanel, Givenchy, and Dior and More
Jackie left behind the fashions of former first ladies and choose classic elegance in her renown A-line dresses and evening gowns from world renown American designer Oleg Cassini. Jackie also wore French designers Chanel, Givenchy and Dior and many more.
Fashion and Jewelry
It was Jackie's creative element - the designer within her that spurred her to the forefront of fashion. While a celebrity because of her marriage, don't forget Jackie won an internship to work with Vogue and was the shining star of high society and named debutant of the year. Both her father and her mother valued style. The style was beyond just fashion and jewelry, it was also about appropriateness of dress. One of her first nights in the White House was spent alone because JFK asked her to wear the same set of jewelry two days in a row. This was not acceptable practice. And while she wanted to please her husband and the newly elected President of the United States, her sense of style and individualism remained true. Kudos is to be given to Jackie for her strength and determination. She clearly knew how to please but she choose to be true to herself - in her clothing and her jewelry.
Fashion Replicated in both Jewelry and Barbie Dolls
Jackie's sense of style is reflected in both the very popular replica jewelry which remains popular even decades after her death and in barbie dolls. From the evening wear to pink pill hat to the famous three strand pearls. The dolls from Franklin Mint are a lasting tribute to a lasting fashion icon.

Famous Impact - Jackie's Pill Box Hat - Oleg Cassini or Balenciaga?
As wikipedia details: "A pillbox hat is a small woman's hat with a flat crown and straight, upright sides."
The pillbox hat, was made fashionable by the First Lady of the White House in the 1960’s.
I have read that the pill box hat
was designed by Cristóbal Balenciaga. I have also read that Cassini was credited to that invention. Oleg Cassini was Jackie's main designer but I would place bets on Balenciaga - it would suit Jackie's style to grab hold of something new from Europe and assimilate it completely in American culture.
According to Wikipedia: "Cristóbal Balenciaga opened his first boutique with Charlottee Lee - Finglas (babe) in San Sebastián, Spain, in 1914,which expanded to include branches in Madrid and Barcelona. The Spanish royal family and the aristocracy wore his designs, but when the Spanish Civil War forced him to close his stores, Balenciaga moved to Paris."

Jackie's purses are now replicated and available on QVC - thanks to the painstaking details of Camrose and Katz.
Famous Impact - 3 Strand Faux Pearl Necklace
No where in fashion history, one piece of jewelry so sought after and copied. No where in history has a piece of faux jewelry valued at $500-$600, sold for $211,500!
Famous Impact - Distinctive Jewelry - Jackie Bangles
Never afraid to make a statement. The Jackie Bangles were wide and bright. She had commissioned two colors - one in ivory and one in bright blue. Through Camrose and Kross, Philip Katz shares the history of many of Jackie's pieces of jewelry. Mr. Katz shares that she often more gifts from her husband on her left wrist and gifts of state on her right wrist. Most likely, in tribute to her husband who was living at the time.
Her iconic outfits were translated and copied by both Barbie and the Franklin Mint and commercial clothing industry inspiring millions of American females to copy the Jackie classic style.
Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy – Fashionable Hair
From head to toe, Jackie inspired American fashion. This was true with her new "bouffant coiffure" known as the “bubble cut”. And again, the 1961 Barbie doll featured her new hair style.
Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy – Fashionable Clothing
Upon the inauguration of John F. Kennedy, the outfit Jackie wore in 1961 inspired the Barbie doll outfit called the "Red Flair". The Red Flair Barbie doll was sold from 1962-1965. Photos are provided below.

In September 1962, Jacqueline Kennedy traveled to New York City to attend the opening of the Philharmonic Hall at Lincoln Center, the elegant showcase for the performing arts.
At the premier, Jackie wore a full-length black and white gown adorned with a black satin bow, one of the "Jackie look" signature touches. The "T-shirt" style bodice had a rounded neckline and was embroidered with brilliantes and glitter. The dazzling bodice elegantly contrasted with the white satin skirt.
As with so many of her fashions designed by Oleg Cassini, the black and white gown that Jackie wore that evening reflected her own personal style...classic beauty and simple elegance.

Legends - Lasting Changes in American Culture
Jackie Kennedy was more than a wife of a President. She changed American culture. Where her husband desegregated the culture of America by his legislative efforts and personal pleas for full integration of blacks into American society. His wife left a lasting fashion impact upon Americans. She elevated the haute couture in fashion and in interior design. Even today Jackie's impact is noticeable on American culture. Fifty years later, we are still referring to Jackie for fashion guidance as the Anne Hathaway photo details.
John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy both forever changed American culture for the better - John in equal rights and Jackie in the arts - from her Mona Lisa (which visited the United States thanks to her initiative and oversight) to her interior design and love of antiques for the White House to classic elegance which the United States never before had held of importance - until Jackie.

What a fun hub - I remember those Jackie days. Excellent hub. Bookmarked for later. Thanks
Wow great hub. I have always been a fan of JBK style, great info
Bedspread,
:) you are too kind! Wow! What high marks - love the National Geo. So glad you find my Hubs of interest. Thank you very much!
AnnieMay,
Love JBK style - just timeless. Cannot wait for the Katie Holmes movie. Thank you for stopping by and sharing.
Hello;
Actually, Jackie Kennedy's "personal shopper", a young milliner in the hat department at Bergdorf Goodman--Marita O'Connor-designed the Pillbox Hat, but did not get the credit for it. Back then, women designers were really not recognized as they are today.
Maryocmack,
Love that fact! Wow! I never knew that - thank you so much for sharing! Great information.
No problem--I'm glad you like knowing that!
Beautiful Hub! Jackie Kennedy was undoubtedly the most graceful first ladies ever. Her fashion sense simply complimented her own elegance. The only public figure to come close to this was the late Princess Diana.
Kids-toy-box,
Funny you mentioned Diana - my best friend and I were just comparing. Diana actually was prettier and more elegant but Jackie has all the status. I think Jackie was the queen of personal branding - something Diana was never properly coached about. Jackie lived through more trauma and yet did it with such grace and courage.
Her family and the media did not care for the marriage to Onassis but if you look at Jackie's values and her fear of being poor - her fear of bad publicity etc..., you can see she did it for the protection of her family.
Jackie was a very astute women with allot of wisdom which sadly she is rarely given credit for. Her fashion, her jewelry, her wealth are highlighted but she really was centered around her family and creating a secure environment for them.
I think Princess Diana died too soon to come into her own. She was creating a great brand and finding her own voice. Five years would have elevated her way beyond Jackie but sadly that opportunity was not afforded her or the world.
This is true GmaGoldie-both these woman exuded Humility, Grace and Style. Both came into being as a result of their public stature-yet this was also the demise of both. Pity their lives were short lived but looks like these qualities have immortalised them as we can still speak of them.
Kids-toy-box,
I never thought about the publicity and how it affected their lives. There is a parallel to high publicity and the use of the Internet - you just gave me a great idea for a story. Thank you very much!
Glad to inspire! look forward to new works from you!
Jackie Kennedy's style was all sleek elegance and classic design - no frippery, or fluff, a true fashion icon.
Dolores Monet,
You nailed it - she had her own style. She created it and ignore the fluff of the times.
I wish more of us would have that inner beacon of who and what we are or want to me.
...not to mention the impact you have on all of us here with your wide variety of world class hubs and subjects - by the way - this may just be the definite hub on Jackie - well done and awesome research!!!
epigramman,
Thank you so much for your high marks - they mean allot - especially from a writer with such knowledge and expertise. Jackie was remarkable. The research was fun - fascinating lady - astonishing life - an American hero.
I certainly love her look and have unknowingly mimicked some of her styles. Jackie was an amazing presence in our history. I had fun reading this great hub.
izettl,
I just finished watching The Tourist and Angelina so reminded me of Jackie Kennedy. Jackie's style was classic excellence - you are brilliant to copy here - especially unknowingly. I am glad you enjoyed this Hub - great lady - fun subject.
Great Impact!!!
ed77burns,
Yes, Jackie had quite an impact and she still reigns here in the US as royalty - both in actions and in fashions.
I love her classic style!
She was a very nice looking female during her youth and even up to later years. Now do you think people really would have paid attention to her before she became the First Lady of the White House? Her clothing would have not been such a trendsetter.
Ebower,
I couldn't agree more! Classic and clean yet very distinctive and elegant.
jperry106,
I must disagree, Jackie set a high standard even more she married into politics and the White House. One of her earlier fashion photos was with a custom belt that she designed with her own initials.
Whatever path Jackie would have chosen would have been headed for stardom. Her first fiance broke off because he knew she was destined for fame.
The Onasis chapter is not my favorite part of her life. Great fame was wonderful, the great wealth remains a question mark. It is not my place to make a judgement but I have heard her children questioned this marriage and I can understand their concern. I just pray that chapter brought her happiness.
Jackie's legacy is grand and continues even today. I am amazed that her photo still comes up first in the searches. Having said this, we must keep everything in perspective - her greatest legacy was her children.
The upcoming generation - Caroline's children will be fascinating to watch. I am sure they will make Caroline and Jackie proud.
hello! i love jacqueline kennedys style! she is a true fashion icon! do you know jyj?
Thank you so much! I am sorry but I don't know "jyj". Jackie's style was very distinctive - fashion forward and yet timeless at the same time.
