Most Famous Cheerleaders in the NFL

The most famous of all cheerleaders here in the United States is the Dallas Cowboys. Here is a fun and frivolous article about the many different cheerleader’s uniforms.

Enjoy the many great photos of beautiful young ladies and laugh with us over the vintage uniforms.

The NFL Super Bowl - Sports Lovers Delights

The NFL or the National Football League is the ultimate in American sports, professional American football in the United States has been revered and loved since its formation with eleven teams in 1920. Originally started as the American Professional Football Association. In 1922, the league changed it name to what is commonplace in the United States - NFL. Unlike Europe and the Eastern world, football in the United State is not soccer. Today the NFL league consists of thirty-two teams from the United States.

The NFL Process for the Playoffs:

Both conferences compete throughout the United States’ football season, with the top winning team competing in the internationally recognized football game, the football game of all football games – the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl - An American Cultural Icon - A National Holiday of Sorts

In the United States, Super Bowl Sunday is akin to a national holiday.

The Half Time Show has grown to an American icon. This day is best known for its Super Bowl parties; the viewership on the television is never greater than for these hours of intense competition.

Even Presidential elections have been influenced by this great cultural event - an international event but a cultural iconic event for all Americans.

Nothing supersedes the commercial opportunities for this one television show, aired only once a year – the end of January or early February depending upon the game schedule for that season.

For more information about this great American cultural event, see the summary of all Super Bowl Half Time Shoes.

Green Bay Packers Cheerleaders

A little known fact, due to lack of interest from their fans, the Green Bay Packers have no official cheerleaders. In fact no one believed me so I am inserting the quote from their website:

Packers Cheerleaders

The Green Bay Packers once had official cheerleaders, but after the 1988 season the decision was made not to reinstate them. While some Packers fans supported the official cheerleaders, many were opposed or indifferent, at best.

Helping the Packers make the decision to discontinue the program was a television news poll in which fans were generally split over whether they wanted the program to continue.

Then the Packers' executive vice president of administration, Bob Harlan was quoted in an official release Feb. 7, 1989, saying: "In general terms, the poll disclosed there were as many fans who expressed opposition to the return of the cheerleaders as there were those in favor of restoring them. On that basis, we felt the appropriate decision at this time would be to continue without them."

At this time, there are no plans to return to official cheerleaders.

For several years, the team has used cheering squads from two local schools, St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis., and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Compared to other stadiums, though, they are not as much a part of the gameday experience at Lambeau Field.

Last Updated: 08/12/09

The Packers' website indicates that they utilize the two university's for their cheerleaders.

Marching Band for The Green Bay Packers - Athletes in Motion & Musicians Too!

And incidentally, the marching band from the University of Wisconsin - Madison is amazing.

The marching band members are both athletes in motion and musicians! The marching band plays throughout the game and right in the aisle of the stadium in addition to the other times on the field.

Outstanding example of the heights of professionalism, working at a craft and truly entertaining the sports audience.

Swimsuit Calendars

Swimsuit calendars are frequent although not consistent through the NFL.

And surprisingly, not all NFL teams have cheerleader of their own - as we learned with the Green Bay Packers.

Cheer Leading - A History Dating Back to the 1880's

Cheer leading is part of the fun of football. Cheer leading uniforms have changed as much as the game itself has changed.

The first record of cheer leading was at the Princeton football game in the 1880's! Imagine so long ago!

In the early years, the skirts for the females were long indeed. But the very first pep squad leaders were men!

Women entered the cheer leading in the roaring 1920's.

Pom poms in the 1930's. Of course, the first pom poms were of paper and gradually migrated to our durable vinyl/plastic pom poms but that innovation took 30 years!

The purpose of the cheerleader is to create euphoria among the team members, among the audience and simply put a smile on every one's face. The cheerleader is the "pep squad", yelling chants to motivate and encourage their teams onward to victory.

The "father" of cheer leading is Johnny (Jack) Campbell, who on November 2, 1898, along with several other young men were officially selected to lead the "yelling", as it was originally called, at the very last Minnesota home game of the 1898 season.

The Pinnacle of Cheerleaders - The Dallas Cowboys - World Renown

"Tex Schramm was the Cowboys general manager and, with his extensive background in television, recognized that professional football had become more than sports - it was sports entertainment. He knew that the public liked pretty girls. In fact, he'd already tried hiring professional models for the sidelines. It was a disaster. The models were beautiful, but they were not athletes. More than 3 hours of exertion in the hundred degree heat of the sidelines had left them in worse shape after the game than the football players. But, the idea just would not go away. Models had not worked, but what about dancers?"

Cheer leading is more than a multi-million dollar sometimes professional industry, it is fun and plays a vital role in helping us relax and enjoy this wonderful competitive and oftentimes aggressive American sport we call football.

Tune in at the beginning of February (for 2010, other years it has been the last Sunday in January) for the Super Bowl Game, the biggest game in the United States and seen by million around the globe. Enjoy the Half Time Show.

Drum Majors and Drum Majorettes

My Mother was a Drum Majorette - talk about a skill! And today there are a few elite bands who still have these talented athletes.

While not cheerleaders per se, the Drum Majors and Drum Majorettes are also an important part of the overall team spirit. And are usually associated more with the band than with the cheerleaders.

About Majorettes and Majors

A majorette is a women, a major is a man who dances and uses baton twirling in a band or school dance company. The very first majorette dates back to the 1800's.

The majorettes have gymnastic skills and baton twirling skills.

For many of the majorettes and majors, their performance can include cartwheels, back flips and more!

The Majorette's Costume

The majorette's costume will mimic the school colors. Often the jacket is military in style and the drum major hat has become traditional throughout the past 40 decades.

Cheerleading Costume - Changes Over the Decades

As the vintage cheerleading costumes showcase, the cheer leading uniform has progressed to shorter and shorter skirts.

Today many of the uniforms are more closely related to bikinis - at least at the professional level of cheerleading.

The vintage skirts showcase the vast differences in fashion over the decades!

History of Celebrities Bikinis - want to review the decades - who wore a bikini - who didn't?  Some of the greatest celebrities never wore a bikini.  Jackie Kennedy posed the question about the morality of the bikini.  From Elizabeth Taylor to Grace Kelly to the million dollar bikini - a fun visual sure to delight and please.

Hi though we in india dont have cheer leaders i find that the way the girls dress , they are more to please male audiance than female ones. But on the whole i think every team is trying to make their girls more an object of sex rather than cherring the team which is their main job

Well, what red-blooded American man doesn't love cheerleaders!? I surely do. Thank you for the excellent story and the exquisite photographs. I'll take a cold shower now. :-)

Love the outfits.

Thank you all very much for your comments. This was one of the most difficult hubs to put together because of the lack of information. Surprisingly, it has been my most popular hub.

In my ignorance, I started out trying for Green Bay Packer cheerleading uniforms only to find out they are the only team that doesn't have cheerleaders. Then the photos were hard to access - not to mention the history.

James = it is classic Americana - you are right.

Thank you all so much!
