Target Market for Hub Pages - Population Statistics

By GmaGoldie

In business, whether you are presenting a public speech or managing a company or a product, your success is dependent upon knowing your target audience. This is also true for the time we spend here on Hub Pages. We all want traffic, we write high quality content to attract and retain visitors and followers. We study keywords to find our niche. We study both the value of the keyword and the global traffic, the local traffic and the competition for those words. All of this is good but the foundation for everything has to start and end with who are we serving - what is our target audience - who is our target market?

Median Age of the World

A successful society is characterized by a rising living standard for its population, increasing investment in factories and basic infrastructure, and the generation of additional surplus, which is invested in generating new discoveries in science and technology.
Robert Trout

Although children are only 24 percent of the population, they're 100 percent of our future and we cannot afford to provide any child with a substandard education.
Ed Markey

In matters of truth and justice, there is no difference between large and small problems, for issues concerning the treatment of people are all the same.

Demographics of the World - What it Means to Us

These statistics affect all of us - in one way or another. Because Hub Pages is a truly global marketplace, the affects of these changing demographics may be magnified.

The assumption is the access to the money in the global marketplace will be completely open. If Google has it option, the world will be at its door.

If a market is closed, it will change the dynamics of the marketplace.

Practically speaking, what these statistics mean to Hub Page writers such as myself, my target market, my target audience IF it is meant to be truly evergreen is the entire global marketplace. I am not writing for the United States alone or my own Midwestern niche market, I am writing for and serving a global marketplace.

My friends on Hub Pages are from both near and far. I drive past the business of one Lake Geneva Hubber each day.

Many fellow Hubbers reside on a different continent than I do - imagine that - multiple pen pals across the world with only my fingertips on my keyboard away from them.

John Lennon wrote a song called Imagine. He challenged us to all live in peace. He challenged us that country boundaries shouldn't matter. "And the world will be as one." Is this possible out on the Internet?

Who is your target audience out here on Hub Pages today? Will it change? Will pay per click statistics eventually report the location of the payment? Or is that already available - a simple click away?

Write the highest possible content, write for the future, write for today, write an evergreen hub that will serve you today and in the future. To do this, keep in mind who your audience is and how that will change with time and with the demographic shift.

Technology Shift - Impact to Hub Pages

If the growth is from overseas, if the growth is our youth, if the computer as we know it will become antiquated and mobile devices such as smart personal devices and mobile phones become the norm - what does this mean to the profitability to Hub Pages? Will these next generation computer tools lend themselves well to Hub Pages?  Or will Hub Pages only be made available to those with a computer?  Leaving out the young person in Asia?  Or will Google Adsense not be applicable to some large continents of the world?

Midwestern United States Population Statistics

Since I live and work and play in the Midwestern part of the United States, I started this analysis with Illinois and Wisconsin.

State Population Statistics:

Illinois population:............................12.9 million, median income $54,000

Wisconsin population:.....................5.65 million, median income $47,000

Population by Major City:

Chicago, Illinois.......................................2.85 million

Cook County............................................5.30 million

Milwaukee, Wisconsin.................................604,000

Madison, Wisconsin.....................................235,000

Other area of the United States:

New York City...........................................8 .39 million

Los Angeles, California.......................... 3.83 million

Chicago, Illinois.........................................2.85 million

Illinois Details: Population Ranked 5th in the US - Total 12,910,409 (2009 est.)[3] - Density 223.4/sq mi (86.27/km2) Ranked 12th in the US - Median income $54,124[4] (17)

Wisconsin Details: Population Ranked 20th in the US - Total 5,654,774[1] - Density 98.8/sq mi (38.13/km2) Ranked 23rd in the US - Median income $47,220 (15th)

Important Highlights

The entire state of Wisconsin's population is 5.65 million, the Cook Country area ALONE is 5.3 million! Cook county is a small geographic area around Chicago.

The City of Chicago's population is half of the entire state of Wisconsin!

If you are in business, if you are job hunting, these are important statistics - this is where the volume of the population is located, this is your biggest market in the Midwest.

Midwestern United States In perspective

The New York City area is much denser. The metro area of NY has 19 million, the City has 8.4 million people. The state of California in 2000 had 33.87 million people and has 8 of the top most populated cities in the US.

Imagine - John Lennon

In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility - I welcome it.
John F. Kennedy

Books constitute capital. A library book lasts as long as a house, for hundreds of years. It is not, then, an article of mere consumption but fairly of capital, and often in the case of professional men, setting out in life, it is their only capital.
Thomas Jefferson

Global Perspective is Your Target Audience

In an effort to gain more traffic, I posted a forum question on how to target and gain traffic from foreign Google sites. The traffic sources under our account detail statistics about the source of each visitor. The majority of mine are Google and watching the foreign Google visitors I find fascinating.

I wanted to gain more traffic from foreign sites and build that base. One of the replies was why? I didn't have the numbers to fully answer this question until now. What I thought was true was proven.

In order to be adequately prepared for the future, we need to target the global marketplace not just the United State.

The United States is the world's third largest population. Historically, it has been the richest population also. A very important global player as we all know. What is interesting and very important is never before has the marketplace ever been truly global. We have the purest form of global marketing out here on Hub Pages. To that end, who is really our target market? Is it only the United States? Is it mainly the US today? And tomorrow too?

Here are some important demographic facts to consider:

1. 70% of the world's population resides in 20 countries.

2. The world population is 4.83 billion.

3. The top three countries populations:

  • United States...................... 310 million #3
  • India..................................... 1.18 billion #2
  • China....................................1.3 billion #1

Remember population does not have a direct parallel to buying power - but that, too, is changing very rapidly.

4. Future Growth Predictions

  • Limited growth in North America
  • Asia will continue to comprise 60% of the world's population
  • Europe and North America will decline as a percentage of the whole
  • Africa will increase
  • Asia is 10 times the size of North America in 2008 (4 billion verses 337 million)
  • By 2150 Asia is predicted to have 5.5 billion people verses North America's 398 million

5. Our Youth of our World is Not in the United States - see the above map detailing the demographics in a heat map format.

Money normally follows youth.

Summary of Population Statistics - Our Economic Impact

The Internet is widely available here in the United States. I can only imagine that the growth is just beginning on the other continents. The exciting item is the upcoming generations, the diversity will be greater, the volume of people much greater, which for me translates into the possibilities for even faster technological advancement.

We are living in a remarkable age and yet, the very best is yet to come.

Be aware - be prepared - enjoy the journey.

Moral of the Story: Write evergreen Hubs for the global market.

How refreshing to read this reflective and insightful hub, GG. You are spot on when you state, "write evergreen hubs" - as long as they also contain readable, worthwhile content.

drbj,

You nailed it as always - the content must be worthwhile - only evergreen with no value is worthless. Thank you so much for stopping by and contributing. Always appreciate your input.

Hi Goldie

Wow! What an informative article and nothing left behind. I commend you on your thorough research. I would make one simple comment on American made goods: Probably the biggest part of the problem is we Americans have priced ourselves out of the market. It's like anything; you can charge what you want, but when people start buying elsewhere, you've priced too high. For MANY people, especially now, a "better" product is no longer the issue. It's money.

Thanks for the hub. I'll be back to re-read it.

Dr. Cherie,

That is a key point - we must keep costs down and remain competitive - it has to be a team effort. We used to have no competition and now that we have lost our manufacturing - wouldn't it be wonderful if we got back in the game and made great products at great prices too!

Always need your insights - thank you very much!

@Kelvin Blog,

You are right - business demands targeting the right audience. We cannot be everything to everyone but knowing who we are servicing helps us deliver better and more efficiently.

@frugalfamily,

Thank you so much! It was fun researching the information. Love bookmarks - awesome!

Loved the article GmaGoldie, and I completely agree, did you know that there are more people living in the eastern part of the world than there are in the western? So yes we need to strive to attract visitors from around the world and at the same time write evergreen - readable, unique content, because those are the qualities of content that will attract the visitors from around the world.

dragnhaze,

I look forward to the day when the Internet is open and our Chinese friends from the eastern part of the world are able to join us. The Internet is the wild west and I can understand China's concern and respect their decision. I applaud all the changes and I am dizzy trying to keep track of the changes.

The mobile devices, I feel, will set us back initially and then we will leap forward. What the mobile device means for HP, I don't know.

Only one item is certain, that is what you stated - "evergreen content" will always be king.
