The historical significance of the creation of this lace is fascinating. Learn about its inventor and how this lace remains one of the rarest and most expensive even in today's modern age. Just to keep us on track, the annual cost of weddings and the increase every year since 2005 has been included. The average cost of this lifetime event is now averaging $30,000. My experienced seamstress advised me that one of my wedding dresses (the one for the reception - the comfortable one!) was made of re-embroidered Alencon lace. So I researched this very special lace and was pleasantly surprised. The lace is absolutely exquisite so it doesn't surprise me that it's pedigree is so extensive with a direct connection to a Royal lace shop.

This city in Normandy, France, approximately 100 miles west of France is now famous for the creation of the original "point d'Alençon" lace. See the map capsule for a point of reference.

"Queen of Lace" = Alencon Lace

If you have ever seen Alencon lace, it is truly the "Queen of Lace". My seamstress called it re-embroidered lace because it's embroiderer on the top of lace. It is this added detail that gives this lace its very special texture and almost its own glow. I am not a lace person, typically if a dress has lace, it is not for me - this lace is very different. It really is best described as "re-embroidered" lace.

Alençon lace or point d'Alençon is a needle lace that originated in Alençon, France. It is sometimes called the "Queen of lace." In 1976, the National Alençon Lace Workshop was established to ensure that the lace-making techniques of the town survived. There is a permanent exhibition of Alençon lace and exhibits showing how it is made in the Musée des Beaux Arts et de la Dentelle in the town centre." ^[1]

The Creation or Invention of the Alencon Lace

Alençon Lace ...." was developed by Marthe Laperriere. As a local needlewoman, she attempted to faithfully reproduce Venetian lace, which was in high demand at that time. She was inspired to improve upon the Venetian lace and with her help the unique Alençon lace was developed. Another innovation credited to her was the division of lacemaking tasks which allowed women to specialize in particular aspects of the work thus working faster and better."

Grace Kelly's Wedding Dress

The photo of Grace Kelly's wedding dress and the lace that is utilized reminds me of the Alencon Lace. It is that rich detailing that sets this lace apart from all others. Instantly when you see this lace, you know it is very special. The added labor and expense to add an embroidery over the lace is what sets this lace apart from all laces.

Cathedral Dress

A lace such as the Queen of Lace could only be outdone by a full cathedral dress. The length of the train being extended specifically for the impact that the dress would make in a massive church or cathedral. As the picture showcases, the long flowing lines of the cathedral dress is one of the many elements that make weddings so special.

Bountiful and Beautiful Bouquets. The fancy dresses to be are always fairytale but look at the flowers - there is nothing more stunning (except the bride herself!) than a gorgeous bouquet of flowers.

From orchids to roses to simple carnations - they are all just lovely. Rumor has it that weddings in May must pay a higher price for bouquets because of Prom season. So new brides and Mother alike be aware of the pros and cons of the May wedding!

The most beautiful bride of all times in my opinion was Grace Kelly - here is my favorite photo.  But look there are many other beautiful brides.  The necklines and the lace change, but the romance and beauty remains.

We are all flowers in the garden of the world.
Some of us are daisys dainty and bright.
Some of us are poppys,with sweet contagious laughter.
If there was a flower for you,
Youd be a wild orchid,
So full of life,colors alive,
Sprinkled with scarlett and purple,
Explosions of colors racing through your petals.
I was walking in a garden,
Looking for a flower with a soul like yours,
A free spirit,so intense and vivid.
There were many flowers,
The tulips were always telling me to stand up straight
and not open up too much.
The violets were deep but when watered with love closed up.
The rose was too perfect in every aspect.

Then there was you so unique and wild.
A orchid with a soul different from them all
different to touch,to hold,to look at.
