The Scary Story of Windows® Vista® Ends Oct 22nd

The introduction of Windows 7® on October 22nd will mark the death of three scary monsters unleashed by Vista® - very appropriate seasonal timing for the release of Windows 7®. As a Windows® Vista® user for close to 9 months, I am thrilled with this upgrade in operating systems. Wikipedia reports that XP continues to dominate the market with 72% and Vista has taken only 19%. Millions have been awaiting this upgrade. This is exciting news because the negativity of the Vista® is real not just media hype and I can explain why.

Back in February of this year, after fixing my hard working personal computer no less than 4 times, I finally upgraded to the HP Touch Screen® unfortunately loaded with Vista®. My criteria was simple 1.) CPU Speed and 2.) The resolution of the screen. Vista® was not my choice. I had avoided an upgrade until the very, very last moment. After not being able to limp along any longer, finally I had to choose and I felt stuck with Vista®; and yes, I did end up regretting on the Vista® platform. That is the bad news, the good news is Microsoft has listened and will shortly unveil Windows 7®. This is great news.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY – A BALANCE VIEW

I love the speed of the HP Touchsmart®along with the elegant presentation. This computer serves me well in its outstanding screen resolutions. The high resolution may appear to be a luxury but with long days spent viewing this screen, it is a necessary tool. However, the negatives that have been reported about Vista® are true. Vista® takes forever to boot. Vista® is a nag. The file types are not compatible with other computers (unless you resave the file in another version). It is not media hype. I have experienced the horrors firsthand of Vista®. Please find below a couple of the monsters that have plagued me:

NEGATIVES ABOUT VISTA® ARE TRUE - NOT JUST MEDIA HYPE

The negatives about Vista® are not just media hype, the negatives are true. Below are three

examples:

Monster #1 - File Isolation: Computers need to connect to other users. Sending files that cannot be opened by other computer users is not acceptable. Vista® security interrupts me constantly, yet when I send a file that no one other than another Vista® (and none of my associates run Vista®) user can open, Vista® silently allows it! This is not just frustrating, it is time consuming, mandating an apology from me and another full email in addition to changing the file type and re-attaching a new file saved in an acceptable format. But more importantly, this process makes me look bad and my anger with Vista® grows and is a nightmare to manage! file management for sharing files is an absolute nightmare with Vista®.

Monster #2 - Security Nag: Security Alerts abound. Windows 7® eliminates the majority of these monsters by providing a convenient corner to accumulate the alerts rather than constant reminders from Vista®. The distracting pop-up windows are I am told are much less frequent. Vista®, for me, was a very needy child, requiring constant feeding or close management under the “User Account Controls”. This needy monster, I am told is just about completely destroyed with the introduction of Windows 7® - Hurray the nagging witch is finally dead!

Monster #3 The Scary Search Is Lessened: Locating files on Vista® demands either a complete search or clicking the file type and then searching. The new Windows 7® I am advised, has libraries by file type – imagine organizing files automatically by type, documents, picture, videos, PDF, allowing the user to locate the file within a much smaller universe!

FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR HUGE WINDOWS 7® UPGRADES THIS CHRISTMAS

Christmas sales will be strong for this great new upgrade with Windows 7®. If the reports that I read are true, Microsoft has listened and effectively responded. This is great news for both Microsoft and for the millions of computer users who have waited patiently for a real upgrade. “Computer nirvana” may not be here yet, but this is a gigantic step forward.
